7 Probable Signs Your Wife Could Be Pregnant

Probable signs are more reliable than the presumptive signs when it comes to determining the possibility of pregnancy in a woman. They are not conclusive as there are other conditions that may present with similar signs and symptoms and yet do not show that the individual is pregnant.

Some of the probable signs that your wife may present with to suggest she may be pregnant include:

1. Uterine changes: Usually the uterus is pear-shaped, but as from the 8th week of pregnancy the shape becomes globular and the consistency also becomes soft. Apart from this, the size of the uterus is enlarged.

2. Osiander’s sign: Following a marked vascularity, there is an increased pulsation in the lateral vaginal fornices as from the 8th week. However, this sign is not completely reliable as any pathological condition that causes the pelvis to be congested could also bring about increased pulsation.

3. Jacquemier’s sign: Pelvic congestion causes the vaginal mucous membrane to become discoloured. The membrane becomes violet blue. This sign could also be present when there is inflammation of the cells of the pelvic tissues.

4. Softness of the cervix: Usually the consistency of the cervix is like the tips of the nose; but when there is pregnancy the cervix becomes as soft as the lips. This signs is noticeable as from the 10th week of pregnancy.

5. Enlargement of the abdomen: The abdomen could be enlarged when there is tumour, full urinary bladder, ascites, gaseous distension, etc. However, no condition causes a remarkable progressive enlargement of the abdomen except when the woman is pregnant. The abdomen becomes rapidly enlarged as from the 16th week.

6. Braxton Hick’s contractions: There are painless uterine contractions as the abdomen is palpated from the 16th week of pregnancy. The contraction occurs about every 15 minutes; though this may increase as from the 35th week.

7. Uterine souffle: This is a soft blowing sound which is heard especially in the lower lateral borders of the uterus on auscultation from the 16th week. The sound usually coincides with the mother’s pulse. This sound is not completely reliable as it could also be heard when there is presence of uterine fibroid.

When the above signs are present, you are almost sure that your wife could be pregnant. However, you still need a medical doctor to confirm she is truly pregnant after a thorough examination and other tests are conducted.
