6 Presumptive Signs Your Wife Could Be Pregnant

Pregnancy is the blessing of marital consummation which is expected by every couple because it heralds the arrival of a baby or babies in the family. However, its signs could be so confusing that the couples find it difficult to understand when the wife is truly pregnant.

The confusion comes as a result of the fact that there are other conditions which present with the same signs and symptoms as pregnancy. It therefore becomes paramount that a proper diagnosis be made before one could be sure that the family is about to be blessed with a baby or babies as the case may be.

Some of the presumptive signs (usually present in the first trimester) that should make the man begin to think his wife may be pregnant include:

1. Amenorrhoea: This is the cessation of menstruation which in most cases could be sudden. Sometimes there may be slight bleeding; this is usually different from the woman’s normal monthly menstrual flow. This could make the couple think there is pregnancy; though certain conditions like serious illness, emotional disturbance and environmental changes could also bring about this change.

2. Morning sickness: Around the 4th to 14th week of pregnancy, about 50% of women present with morning sickness. The condition is so named because the woman vomits and feels awful especially in the mornings. When this is coupled with amenorrhoea, it is suggestive of pregnancy.

3. Skin changes: There is skin pigmentation in the form of linea nigra, cloasma, darkening of the primary areola of the breast, as well as the formation of the secondary areola of the breast. Striae also form on the abdomen, thigh and breast.

4. Breast changes: There is enlargement of the breast; there may also be darkening of the nipples. The nipples become more erectile as well. Other changes include presence of surface veins, secretion of fluid/colostrums, appearance of montgomery’s tubecles (12 to 30 small nodules), etc.

5. Bladder irritation: There is frequency of micturition (passing of urine) before the 12th week and is usually without pain or burning. 6. Quickening: Between the 16th and 20th week, the mother feels the movement of the foetus in the uterus for the first time.

The first thing that comes to your mind when you notice these signs is that your wife could be pregnant. It should however be noted that these signs are not conclusive of pregnancy because of the fact that several other conditions present with some of them. It would therefore be wise to carry out a proper investigation or test before concluding that a woman is pregnant.
